Candied sweet potatoes are a beloved side dish at Thanksgiving, known for their rich, sweet flavor and comforting texture.
Typically made by roasting or baking sweet potatoes, they are then coated in a syrupy mixture of brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and sometimes marshmallows, creating a luscious, caramelized glaze.
This dish adds a perfect balance of sweetness and warmth to the Thanksgiving spread, complementing savory main courses like turkey and stuffing.
Candied sweet potatoes are often passed around the table as a family favorite, evoking feelings of nostalgia and tradition, making them an essential part of the holiday meal.
This is one of our family's favorites!
We've been making this for years, and if we need to make more or less than 6 sweet potatoes, we just follow a simple formula:
1 sweet potato + 1 T plant butter + 2 T packed brown sugar
Candied Sweet Potatoes
Wash the potatoes, wrap in foil and bake at 350 for about 40 minutes or until done but not too soft.
Cool. (For holidays, we bake these the day ahead and chill them until we are ready to make the side dishes.)
Peel the potatoes and slice in pieces about 1" thick.
Put in greased 9x13 glass baking dish in a single layer.
Melt the plant butter and pour over the potatoes.
Sprinkle brown sugar over the whole pan.
Bake at 350° until the sauce is bubble and the sugar is melted.
If you want a crispy finish on top, you can broil them carefully.
